Han Sing is an ex-cop who went to prison in Hong Kong to let his father, a Chinese crime lord, and his brother escape to San Francisco. When his brother is killed, seemingly by a black gang headed by Isaak O'Day, Sing breaks out of prison and gets to America to discover his brother's killer and avenge his death.
While Romeo Must Die is not Shakespeare in scope or aim, it is a very palatable way to string together a series of engaging martial arts displays interspersed with some very attractive people (especially Russell Why-Doesn't-He-Make-More-Movies Wong) and something of a circuitous, but easily followed dysfunctional family/loyalty/corruption/NFL franchise plot.
Jet Li is becoming another of the unstoppable Asian forces to hit the Hollywood market (with Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh, and Chow Yun-Fat). This is only his second shot in Hollywood (after Lethal Weapon 4) and it is one of the best Jet Li films I have ever seen.<br/><br/>Jet plays Han Sing, a Chinese policeman sent to jail to protect his father and brother. When he hears his brother has died, he goes to Oakland, where there is a rivalry between Chinese and African-Americans. He falls in love with Trish O&#39;Day (pop star Aaliyah), the daughter of the other side&#39;s leader (played with greatness by Delroy Lindo), and of course, this causes more friction between the rival factions. <br/><br/>Corey Yuen did some amazing fight choreography, taking a page from his real-life brother Yuen Woo-Ping (The Matrix) by using wires to enhance the fights. Russell Wong is back in style, since his defunct series, Vanishing Son.<br/><br/>For some extreme martial arts action and a plot with two young people falling in love despite their families&#39; rivalry, this is the one to check out. Great action, great plot, and great butt-kicking.
Just don't think about what's going on, and you should be OK.
Several action scenes were censored for the British BBFC 15 version: fighting scenes and shootouts.
